François Joseph Peterinck

Porcelain maker · 1719–1799

François-Joseph Peterinck brought Tournai porcelain to prominence across Europe: the Imperial and Royal Manufactory he built up exported its tableware, often decorated in cobalt blue, throughout the continent. His works lined the Scheldt, on the quai des Salines and the quai Dumon, to make transport easier. The need for skilled labour even led to the founding of the Tournai Academy of Fine Arts in 1756. The works, bought by Boch Frères, closed in 1891. François-Joseph Peterinck was an ancestor of Louise de Bettignies, a heroine of the First World War. Their two Camuches, side by side, carry this family bond on in the heart of Tournai.
