René Desclée

Photographer · 1868–1953

A lawyer from the upper ranks of the industrial bourgeoisie, René Desclée was a passionate amateur photographer. As early as April 1910, the very year Hélène Dutrieu earned her pilot's licence, he was photographing Tournai from the sky, with a camera hoisted aloft by a kite, at the Plaine des Manœuvres. The cathedral and the picturesque houses that once surrounded it were his favourite subjects. He built almost all of his own equipment and left some 7,000 photographs, including 124 aerial views.

His house is on rue Saint-Jacques.
