Louise de Bettignies
Spy and war heroine · 1880–1918
Born in 1880 in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux into a family with close ties to Tournai and its porcelain, Louise de Bettignies spoke English, German and Italian. During the First World War she became ‘Alice Dubois’, an agent for British intelligence, and ran a network of around a hundred people that is thought to have saved more than a thousand British soldiers in 1915. Arrested near Tournai on 20 October 1915 and sentenced to death, a sentence later commuted to hard labour, she died in Cologne on 27 September 1918. France and the United Kingdom honoured her posthumously. Louise de Bettignies was a descendant of François-Joseph Peterinck, founder of Tournai's famous porcelain manufactory. In a nod to this family history, the two Camuches that bear their names now stand side by side.
