Hélène Dutrieu

Cyclist and aviator · 1877–1961

Born in Tournai, Hélène Dutrieu first made her name on two wheels: the women's world hour record in 1893, then world track sprint champion in 1896 and 1897. She then turned to the skies and, in 1910, obtained pilot's licence no. 27 from the Aéro-Club de Belgique, the first Belgian woman and the fourth woman in the world to do so. The first winner of the Coupe Femina (167 km in 2 hours 35 minutes) and made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1913, she ran ambulance units during the Great War.
