Hippolyte Boulenger

Landscape painter · 1837–1874

Born in Tournai and orphaned in 1853, Hippolyte Boulenger moved to Brussels, where he trained as a landscape painter. In 1864 he settled in Tervuren and gathered around him painters who shared his vision: the Tervuren School, the Belgian counterpart of the Barbizon School, recognised him as its leading figure. Nicknamed the ‘Belgian Corot’, he won the gold medal at the Brussels Salon in 1872 for The Old Beech Avenue at Tervuren, and died at the age of 36.

A street in Tournai bears his name: rue Hippolyte Boulenger.
